I currently own

Rotel RCD-971

Rotel RC  - 971

Rotel RB  - 991

Mission V63 Speakers

Denon TU - 260 L II

I want to get cleaner crisper sound. Any advice would be appreciated.

You dont say what cabling you use to string the kit together, this would be helpful.

As a former owner of the same speakers as you have, I found they were more bright   (pronounced upper mid)  than crisp.

If you are not overly worried about losing some bass, try QED's Silver Anniversary, pin sharp detail, but, a bass kiler!

thanks for that, i do need to upgrade all my connectors.

what speakers have you currently got?

How much can you spend ?

Hard to offer suggestions without knowing a budget.

Are you looking to replace the speakers ?

Mark.

i'm looking to make a decent improvement. what made me want to do it, is i was listening to the new sigur ros album and track 7. towards the end of the song a big bass drum sounds, and to me it doesn't sound right (its hard to explain with words but i'm going to try) it sounds like the bass drum stops when it shouldn't. I don't know, if the drum sound was a a sphere, it isn't complete, maybe 3/4. sorry if this sounds reidculous. i want to upgrade my system so the whole sound comes through. it could be the speakers, it could be the amp. budget is 1000

Hi Mark,

Before you change or buy, make sure all connections are clean and tight, even power cord, if your amp has pre out links clean these too or replace them with interconnect.? also give CD optic a clean ? .......Carl.

Hi Mark, ive had a number of sets since the Volares, they were firstly replaced with Focal Chorus 714s, then Quad 22L's, and then the current ones, PMC FB1+.

They all improved on each other, but the Focals started the ball rolling, and wre imo, a good deal better than the Missions.

Going 2nd hand would replace your whole kit for £1k, but id certainly replace the speakers first, budget £400 ish, and that should certainly improve things.

thanks for this

Mark, just making it clear, spend £400 2nd hand, not new, that wont reap as big a benefit.

Look in Hifi Wigwam , hifi for sale, and hifi choice forums, theres usualy enough up for grabs to re do your whole set up within your budget.

Theres a set of Quad 21L's in hifi wigwam , asking £350 from £700.....I bet you could haggle him down a bit........

Hi,

One tweak that has worked on my system is put cones underneath my cd player (aluiminium/metal) it may brighten it up - dont laugh anyone . If biwired speakers try QED silver on the connection to the tweeters. Yes clean your connections too.

Up grading components for 1000 pounds, I second the focals or the new B&W 684 (I think), the cambridge audio 640c v2 or marantz cd6002 with matching amps - they will have more sparkle than the Rotels I would think. The chord crimson interconnects and the new chord speakers cables.

Regards,

Steve.

Good point from Stephen re the SA to the tweeters!
