SONY STR-DA5300ES AV AMP Remote Control Programming
Help with programming the remote control

After months of deliceration I got myself a SONY STR-5300ES AV Receiver.  Some of the reviews I read about the product was that it was difficult to set up.  I did not have this problem but I do have a problem with the main remote control supplied with the unit.  I can't seem to program it to control other units, even those manufactured by Sony. I have managed to program some individual buttons for my cable box but I can't change or clear them.  I can't even reset the whole thing and clear all functions I have programmed although I have followed the instructios to the letter.

Sony have told me to seek help from my retailer who is looking into it.  In the mean time, if there an owner of STR-DA5300ES out there who has managed to successfully program the remote control, or anyone else who has experience of this, I'd very much like to hear from you to find out how you managed it!

Thank you.

Hi Askari,

Look in remote set up manual for macro set up, this will set up codes from other remotes, before you start make sure the batteries are new in all remotes ? - this works by putting your original remotes for tv,dvd, etc, in front of (amp remote) so that signal can be sent face to face to amp remote automatically, via infra red.- you may need to clear the memory first? - here is link to site.link:

Hope you sort out ?.     ..........Cheers ......Carl.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the reply.

Perhaps I have missed your point but setting up macros carry out a number of operations by pressing one of the MACRO buttons.  This is possible only for the functions that are already stored or you have programmed into the remote control.  It cannot perform functions that the remote does not know about.  This is the bit that I am trying to achieve, putting the codes of other devices into the remote control.  Macro programming is defined on page 123 of the manual but my problem occurs at page 117 (Programming the remote) where I get stuck on STEP 2 with my remote not responding as the manual describes.

I have tried to get round the problem by using the ‘learning’ function to copy each button from other remote controls as you have mentioned (page 124).  Now this works fine up to a point – I can copy the functions of the buttons but I must have made a mistake with the first copy, now I can’t change or delete the erroneous copied function (page 125).  I can’t even clear all the programming of the remote as described on page 126, I do not get the three flashes of RM SET UP button.

Ironically, the functions of the Sony DVD recorder that I am trying to program in already seem to exist in the remote under DVD/BD input button.  However, as I have used DHMI to connect the DVD, I am not getting the benefit of the pre-programmed functions.

Thanks for your response Carl  but it’s back to the drawing board for me.

Hi Askari,

Have you tried leaving batteries out of remote, this should revert to original factory program ?

If yes, i suggest you ask for a replacement, if they refuse ask for money back ? i bet you feel like banging head against wall ! be strong, be positive.

Let us know how things turn out.       .........Carl.

Thanks Carl,

I will leave the batteries out for a few hours and hope it resets the remote but the original problem will probably not go away!

Hi Carl,

I left the batteries out for about 20 hours but that did not clear the memory of the remote.

However, I did manage to resolve the original problem  – I was pressing the OK button instead of the ENTER button.   I still have the issue that I can’t’ over write the commands that I have “learnt” into the remote (page 124) or clear all programmed commands (page 126).  I am going to read the procedures for the umpteenth time again to make sure I am not pressing a wrong button here as well!

Thanks for your help.
