TV price difference UK v. France?

I had previously posted the note below...

The reason this friend wants to bring his TV to the UK was that he had noticed significant price differentials between TV's purchased in France v. the UK. For example, his 50" Panasonic plasma that sells for around £4,000. in the UK can be had in France for around £2,500.

Anybody know why there is such a price difference (and why we shouldn't all drive to France to buy our plasmas)?

"Someone I know is moving to the UK from France and wanted to know if their fancy, new Panasonic plasma TV would work here in the UK. Other than needing an adaptor for the electrical plug, is there anything else that might hinder proper functioning?"
