Following in the footsteps of the Beeb, Channel 4 has launched a high-definition service on Sky that went live 10 December, and will be a simulcast of Channel 4 but with some shows produced and broadcast in HD.
A Channel 4 spokesman stated that the new HD channel will include a selection of entertainment, music, films and dramatic content, with benchmark shows like Ugly Betty, music events such as The Scissor Sisters and Keane (God help us all) live in concert and a variety of classic and contemporary films served up.
The volume of HD content is also promised to increase over time as the channel produces more of it.
Indeed, Channel 4 has just signed a deal with Lime Pictures to start producing hip soap Hollyoaks in HD as of Spring 2008, making it the first indigenous soap to demonstrate its commitment to the next-gen format.
Channel 4 HD will be available without a subscription to viewers with a Sky HD box and will become the 14th dedicated HD channel available via Mr Murdoch's satellite platform, making it by far the most bountiful HD provider in Europe.
