Super test: HDMI cables pt2

2 3 Next page: TCI Copperhead Lite, WireWorld Ultraviolet 52, XtremeHD HDMI >

< Previous page: BetterCables Silver Serpent Reference, Chord Silver Plus HDMI 1.3, IXOS TRU-1080 XHT458 2 1

Molex HDMI

Molex is a key member of the team behind the HDMI standard and was one of the first to make HDMI cables. They are among the more affordable offerings, with 2m lengths for £15.95 and a 5m version for £24.95. The Molex cable gives clean outlines and strong colour reproduction. Skin tones look okay but contrast is fair rather than excellent. Overall its performance has a slightly dull sheen compared to the luxury cables.

Verdict
Plus points
Very affordable, up to current HDMI spec
Minus points
Not the best for contrast or the smoothest of images

Overview
Price: From £50.00 for 1m to £240 for 20m
More info: QED
Key features: 1080p compatible up to 20m; v1.3 compliant; fully shielded connectors; custom plugs with gold plated pins; 28 AWG conductors

QED QUNEX HDMI-P

This striking looking cable is dressed in a translucent purple plastic covering and though it appears less sturdily built than more expensive products, it's still among the best for picture performance. There's barely any noise to see and outlines are beautifully clean. Contrast and colour are full-bodied, matching the quality of some rivals costing significantly more. Overall, QED has made a terrific all-rounder for a decent price.

Verdict
Plus points
Superb general quality; a good value upgrade
Minus points
No quibbles with the quality given its price

Overview
Price: From £59.99 for 1m to £97.50 for 6m
More info: Supra
Key features: 1080p compatible up to 6m; v1.3 compliant; double shielded high-purity oxygen-free copper conductors; fully shielded connectors; gold-plated contacts; stabilisation flange

Supra HF100 1.3

Made in Sweden in Supra's own factory (which allegedly is not the case with many other cable companies, who use external manufacturers for certain elements), the HF100 uses plastic mouldings and sleeve for plugs and cabling respectively, but it's very thick and heavy, suggesting high-end credentials. Noise is practically non-existent, the contrast range is exceptional and detail is pin-sharp. Colour looks solid and subtle, notably with flesh tones. This is a highly capable and great value offering.

Verdict
Plus points
Heavyweight cable construction; exceptional home cinema picture
Minus points
High contrast performance might make a few scenes seem darker
