We reported on Texas Instruments' tiny DLP Pico projector from this year's CES show in Las Vegas, but at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week the company finally announced production availability of the chipset, to be available in the second half of 2008.
The chips 'deliver functionality that will improve the visual display experience from handheld devices and transform their use from 'tiny screen' viewing to 'big picture' viewing allowing others to share in the video and graphics experience', states Texas Instruments.
Translated, it means that when incorporated into a mobile phone, users will be able to project movies, photos and the like for proper viewing rather than squinting at a tiny screen.
The DPP1500 processor is targeted at embedded applications for handheld devices, while the DPP1505 is for the standalone handheld companion market.
Specs wise, the DLP Pico delivers an aperture ratio of more than 92 per cent effectively meaning tens of thousands of pixel elements, switching speeds of less than 20 microseconds and DarkChip native contrast ratio process technology.
'We expect projection within handset devices to start appearing in 2009, in a market where significant volumes are expected over the next five years', commented Bill Coggshall, founder of independent projector market research experts Pacific Media Associates.
