Despite reporting only days ago on 'almost confirmed' rumours of a deal struck between Apple's iTunes and The Beatles' Paul McCartney concerning the digital availability of the Fab Four's back catalogue to the tune of $400 million, new reports are poo-pooing the whole story.
Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the joint venture owned by Sony and Michael Jackson and one of the companies that owns the rights to a large proportion of the back catalogue, has denied that The Beatles will soon be available on iTunes.
A spokesperson told online tech site CNet that reports of a deal are 'untrue' and that if a deal had been struck, Sony/ATV would 'absolutely be informed'.
Further water was thrown on the fires of speculation when Apple also denied any claims of a deal, describing the rumours as 'unsubstantiated speculation' and adding in what we imagine was a particularly haughty tone that, 'this is not news, nor is it a scoop'.
Gutted, but we'll keep you posted as the story develops.
