B&W has also been sexing up some models with a piano lacquer black finish that makes a significant improvement to the otherwise boxy appearance. This treatment has been applied to the CM and 800D models to great effect, now can we have white lacquer as well?

Canadian electronics meister Classé has a new home cinema processor in the SSP-800 (£5,500), this replaces the SSP-600 and according to the spiel betters the brand's top preamp and CD player when combined with a Classé CDT-300 transport, thus offering a result for two-channel enthusiasts as well.

Naim's foray into hard disk drive takes the shape of the HDX (£4,500) a 400GB machine that makes bit for bit copies of up to 600 CDs and can be upgraded with Naim's range of external power supplies. It is claimed to offer the sound quality of a Naim CD player with the convenience of a good MP3 player.

Norway's fastest expanding hi-fi brand delivered its ultimate loudspeaker, the Nordic Tone Model 1 (€17,000) is a multi-company development that's taken four years to come to fruition. The case is made of sandcast aluminium that is vibration damped, the material being chosen because it is both thin and stiff.

Maestro (€5,000) is a one-box DVD system that plays SACD as well as CD and offers three times 120watts of power for the LCR speakers in a surround system. A wireless system sends signals for the rear channels to the ECRF-75 class D power amplifier thus removing a major source of cable clutter.

Not content with its own well regarded amp range Electrocompaniet has bought another Norwegian amplifier brand, Dynamic Precision, and used its designs to come up with the range topping DP line consisting DP C1s (€6,000) a preamp with no controls aside from the remote and DP A1s (€12,000) a 250watt power amp. Both are no compromise heavyweights with vanishing levels of distortion.
