Marantz unveils 'WEAVE' home entertainment system

Marantz ZC4001

Although multiroom audio via a mains supply isn't a wholly new invention (see our Powerline Audio review), Marantz is the first manufacturer claiming to offer full CD quality mains streaming with the announcement of its new WEAVE (Wired Entertainment Accessible via Electricity) products.

The WEAVE system comprises two units, the beautifully styled ZC4001 receptor and the ZR6001 AV receiver. The ZC4001 accesses your main home entertainment set-up via the mains as soon as it is plugged in, allowing you to listen to radio stations, CD players and any other component in your main system via its two speakers and built-in amplifier. The ZC4001 also can be operated independently with up to six '4001s plugged in at any one time around the home.

Alongside this, the ZR6001 AV receiver has a portable, lightweight design so you can move it from room to room. Alternatively you can add up five more units in whichever room you like.

However, together the ZC4001 and ZR6001 cost a whopping £700 (£199 for each additional ZC4001), so in all honesty you might find it cheaper simply setting up a wireless connection in your house and buying a music streamer.

Could anyone explain to me how on earth these are meant to work? The article says that the signal is carried through your mains supply?! That sounds like a complete impossibility.
