Sound & Vision - The Bristol Show 2007

s-and-v-outside1.jpg

The 20th Bristol Show took place at the weekend, and AVReview took a trip out west to check out what's coming up for 2007. Still far and away the UK's biggest dedicated hi-fi and AV event, it attracted the great and the good from across the industry to show off their wares. Here's our report.

Rega P3 turntable

An updated version of the P3 should be with us in spring for £398 with the option of separate £150 power supply.

Pioneer HTP-GS1

Featuring both audio and digital inputs, the GS1 kicks out 5.1 surround sound for your DVD player or games console. Available now for £300.

Quad II eighty valve amp

Hidden in the corner was a cool looking prototype valve amp. Development is in the early stages. Expect more details later this year.

Quad 12L powered studio monitor

Quad also previewed a powered version of its acclaimed 12L series speaker. More details tba.

Quad CDP-2 CD player

The CDP-2 is an update of Quad’s 99 CD-P and differs only in its transport mechanism. The player features no less than six digital outputs.

MJ Acoustics Xeno surround system

Surround speakers to augment MJ Acoustics’ popular Pro 50 Mark II subwoofer. 5.1 sound for £650 sometime mid summer.

Dali Mentor 1 loudspeaker

This cute little standmount features a hybrid dome and ribbon tweeter. Price £1000.

Dynaudio Audience 42 SAT satellite speaker

This odd-looking speaker is designed to be wall-mounted as part of a surround system.

Marantz DV7001 universal player

Marantz claims this scaled down version of the £1500 DV9600 has cut back a little on the high res audio quality but that the DVD player is virtually unchanged. Price £600.

Canton CD 3500 speaker

Canton CD 3500 wireless speaker system

This nifty little wireless transceiver plugs into any source and sends a signal using Canton’s own wireless technology to their speakers. Transceiver and stereo pair £2200.

KEF Wireless 5000 speakers

KEF Wireless 5000 surround system

The RF module on top of the DVD player sends a signal to the rear speakers. Complete 5.¹system costs £1500.

Yamaha Soavo-900SW subwoofer

This £1000 sub plus a centre channel make up the 5.¹version of the Soavo.

Yamaha Soavo loudspeaker

This unique-looking new £2000 three-way floorstander has no parallel sides to avoid unwanted resonances. There’s also a two-way standmount version due in March for £1200.

Roksan Platinum M Series-1 preamp and amp

Roksan's new hi-fi components are due for release in the summer. There's a PRI5B preamp (£2,500) and STI30B amp (£4,000).

NAD T5850 DVD player and T785 7.1 surround receiver

NAD’s new range of surround receivers will come without DAB to keep costs down but there will be an additional DAB module. The top model will cost £1,800 in April.

Momentum 3i bookshelf speakers

Unfortunately the 3is weren’t set up for listening. The cabinets looked great though. Out April for £1,745 per pair.

Momentum 4i floorstander

The 4i is a two and a half design, using four drive units in each enclosure. Oh, and they sounded fantastic. Available April for £2,695 per pair.

Denon CX3

Denon’s much-trailed high end mini system got its UK debut at Bristol.

Onkyo CBX-100 CD receiver

CD player and FM radio for now, but there should be a DAB version soon for €300.

Loewe Individual Surround system

Loewe’s full HD 1080p screens aren’t due out until later this year so for this show the company was promoting its new surround system. Available now.

Onkyo A9355 digital amp

The new 80W low ender in Onkyo’s digital amp range is coming in April for £300.

Onkyo D-TK10

Handmade, with a maple cabinet by classy guitar maker Takamine, a limited edition of Onkyo’s rather lovely standmount should be with us in autumn for £2,000. The cabinet, incidentally, is a thin one, designed to resonate sympathetically with the music, in contrast to most speaker cabinets, which are designed to eliminate as much resonance as possible.

Tivoli Music System

This slick looking system comprises a CD player, FM/AM tuner, amp and speakers. Available in a number of finishes, it’s due for release in April for £650.

Goldring GX200 earphones

These sound isolating phones come with a choice of three earbud fittings. Black version out next week, coloured models in six weeks. Priced at £50.

Retailing at £4,150 the new G95 does 1080p upscaling and comes with a whopping 5 x 100W amps built-in.

Yamaha NXU10 USB powered portable speaker system

Powered by USB or batteries, the NXU10 fires out 20 watts power to your iPod or other MP3 player. Available April for £149.

Cyrus AV Master 8.0 surround processor and Discmaster 8.0 DVD player

These new 7.1 channel processor and DVD/CD player cost £700 and £800 respectively. There’s also a QX version of the Discmaster with 24-bit/192kHz DAC for £1,000.

Pioneer Gclef

Comprising two amps, A9 (£699) and A6 (399) plus D6 CD player (£399) Pioneer’s new Gclef system sounded amazing.

Sennheiser PXC450

Noise-cancelling headphones with 'talk-through' mode. Due March £299. The talk-through mode uses the noise-cancelling microphone to boost the frequencies where the human voice usually resides, the better to hear someone speaking next to you. This is then transferred over the music to your ears. It works very well in practise, and could come in handy for those long haul flights.

Fatman iTube 182

The 18W 182 version of Fatman’s much-admired valve amp for iPods comes with a dedicated iPod dock for £699.

Fatman iTube 252

The new 25W valve iPod amp comes with a free dock for £899. Due in March.
