MartinLogan Source & Purity

US-based speaker specialist MartinLogan has unveiled two impressive looking new floorstanding models on the UK market in the shape of the serenely named Source and Purity (pictured).

Refining its hybrid electrostatic technology MartinLogan claims these new models deliver “amazing sonic clarity at prices far lower than expected for speakers of their type and quality”.

Almost identical in the looks department, both Source and Purity combine high-performance electrostatic panels with conventional coned bass drivers designed to create a sonic experience that “melds the unique speed and clarity of electrostatic technology with genuinely deep bass”.

Where they do differ is the 'fully active' design of the Purity model, making it the world's first fully active hybrid electrostatic loudspeaker with 200 watts of power amplification built in to drive the speaker across its entire frequency range. This effectively makes it an amp and speaker in one, so users can plug in devices like iPods, TVs and computers directly and get hi-fi sound without the need for other middleman componentry.

The Source model is not fully active and thus remains a (not so) simple hybrid electrostatic speaker, which is why it costs £1,600 per pair in comparison to the Purity's £2,090 per pair price tag.

Both models are available now from UK distributor Absolute Sounds.
