Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW40

Sony has launched a new Full HD 1080p home theatre projector that it's claiming 'brings superb cinematic picture quality to a wider audience', thanks to what we are assuming is a more pocket-friendly price tag than is typically associated with such devices.

The BRAVIA Full HD VPL-VW40 uses Sony's SXRD technology 'to recreate the original cinematic experience as closely as possible at home'.

The VW40 incorporates Sony's BRAVIA ENGINE custom processor commonly seen in the company's LCD TV range to digitally enhance each frame in real time thus 'invisibly decreasing' noise in the image and intensifying the vibrancy of colours.

Other technologies include the proprietary Sony SXRD panel that delivers the 1920x1080 resolution required for Full HD. A 2.5ms response time enables smoother on-screen action, Sony Advanced Iris 2 delivers a very respectable 15,000:1 contrast ratio and 24p True Cinema means hooking up a compatible next-gen disc spinner (Blu-ray or the PS3) via one of the dual HDMI connectors to give perfect image and sound rendition just as the filmmaker shot it.

'The VPL-VW40 will have a strong appeal for the price-conscious Home Theatre enthusiast who does not wish to compromise on quality,' comments the unfortunately named Nicola Plump, product manager of projectors, Sony TV Operations Europe. 'It offers features typically only available on far more expensive projectors...There's nothing else offering so much at this price, which is why we expect this projector to be a very popular product'.

Despite the comment, price and release dates have not yet been announced.
