Sony BMG CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz has told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that the company is 'working on an online music subscription service'.
With its vast back catalogue of music Sony is in a strong position to generate a lot of interest, with the company apparently in talks with 'other major music distributors' as well as trying to arrange cooperation agreements with mobile phone manufacturers.
'The simplest option would be a flat rate under which a monthly payment would provide access to our entire music catalogue for digital players, including Apple's iPod', Schmidt-Holtz elaborates.
Users would be expected to pay around six to eight euros monthly (£4.70 to £6.25 at current exchange rates) for unlimited access with the suggestion that they could keep the songs after terminating their subscription - something rival sites do not offer.
Sony does currently sell its songs DRM-free via the American Amazon site, but this site would operate in Europe too.
