Blu-ray beating early DVD sales

A recent survey from market analyst Futuresource apparently shows that Blu-ray is outstripping early DVD sales performance and is expected to continue the trend over the course of the next decade, despite what analysts say about the growing popularity of downloads.

The company compared the uptake of Blu-ray against the early uptake of DVD and simultaneously at how sales of BD players compared with sales of early-gen DVD players. And the results were favourable for Blu-ray, to the surprise of many.

Commented the amusingly named Jim Bottoms from the MD corporate development side of Futuresource, 'Focusing on like-for-like coverage of Western Europe and comparing the first few years of uptake, the early indications are that BD player sales are running way ahead of DVD after the same time period. 2008 represents year three for BD and here at Futuresource Consulting, we anticipate more than 10 million players, including PS3, in use by the end of this year. Looking back to DVD's early years, we see that closer to 1.5 million DVD players were installed by the end of year three'. Not bad stats for Sony's next-gen triumph then.

And consider that as new players develop prices will inevitably come down alongside disc prices, and consumer awareness will only go up, which will make it, according to Futuresource, the disc-based product of choice.
