| Mylo with his ROKR
|
AVR joined the press scrum at the launch party for the long-awaited iTunes phone, the Motorola ROKR, in London yesterday.
Indie electro popper Mylo played a few tunes in the former Scala cinema in London's Kings Cross, drinks and expensive looking nibbles were served and we were treated to a demo of the device itself.
While we'd love to get excited about a device like this, the fact is that it's just not ready yet. It looks like a bog-standard mobile without any of Apple's (or even Motorola's) design flair.
The on-screen interface looks iPody all right, and transferring tunes from PC or Mac is easy, but it's slow, doesn't hold many tunes and has only basic play and shuffle functions.
The device itself is fairly underwhelming - a basic phone with an iTunes-style interface for playing music. It comes with a 256MB TransFlash memory card, which will store around 100 songs.

The sound is okay through the supplied headphones (not so good through the onboard stereo speakers), though the mini jack socket means you'll probably need an adaptor if you want to use any other headphones.
There's little doubt that this is the way portable music is going, but on this evidence, none of us will be retiring our iPods just yet.
