PSP - Now available with hard drive

Yes we know the PSP (Playstation Portable) is primarily a gaming machine so perhaps it's a little odd that it's getting coverage here, but bear with us because this news is relevant. With a definite gap in the market for a good quality, stylish and video-capable handheld device, Datel has announced a product which could transform the PSP into that very machine.

Previously hindered by its low onboard memory, short battery life and use of UMD discs to watch films (who wants to buy a DVD version and a UMD version of the same film?) the Datel device, which attaches seamlessly as a battery, adds a 4GB hard drive and a doubled battery life to the PSP.

The quality of the PSP's screen combined with the expanded memory and ten hours battery life could make it the perfect choice for watching films on the go. Although with an expected price of around £150 it costs nearly as much as the Sony machine itself, now that Datel has proved it can be done we expect many more similar products to hit the market soon, hopefully driving down the price.

In much the same way that the Playstation 2 sold many extra units because it doubled as a relatively cheap DVD player, perhaps now the PSP will replicate this with its portable media functions?

After the incredibly disappointing Motorola ROKR, the W800i Walkman model was left to dominate the music phone market. However, it will soon have what could turn out to be some very healthy competition in the form of this new offering from Nokia.
