The living legend that is Pete Townsend has spoken out over his concern that iPod users could be sending themselves deaf. The axe-maestro commented that he has “unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf. Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired. If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you MAY be OK ... But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."
Pete's own hearing has been damaged over the years and he puts it down not to countless ear drum bursting gigs, but actually the use of earphones whilst recording in the studio. As such, with our tendency to listen to our iPods 'Anyway Anyhow Anywhere', for example on the 'Magic Bus', there is a greater risk of hearing damage for 'My Generation'. Townsend didn't go on to say that we should try to find a 'Substitute' for our earphones and certainly didn't say “ 'I Cant Explain' why”. If Pete's comments do highlight a serious risk then we can expect official warnings to become more prevalent so as the issue doesn't become 'A Legal Matter'. Unfortunately 'Boris the Spider' wasn't available for comment (I can't apologize enough for that paragraph but we all need a good groan from time to time).
The best course of action is of course just to be aware of how loud your playing music through your iPod and adjust it accordingly, we recommend sound cancelling earphones as they block out background noise allowing you to play the music at a lower level and still fully enjoy it.
