Another day and we're still no closer to knowing which way the next gen HD-disc war will go. Blu-ray? HD DVD? Or (dare we say it) neither? Far safer then to plump for an upscaling DVD player, which will polish up your standard DVDs to something approaching HD quality.
Denon has become a front runner in upscaling DVD players (check out our reviews of the DVD-A1XVA and the DVD-1920), and its latest model, the 2930, lifts much of the video tech from its wallet shredding DVD-A1XVA into a somewhat more affordable package.
The tank-like 2930 is fitted with a double layer lid, triple layer bottom and heavy transport structure and comes armed with the latest Silicon Optix REON VX chip and full REON VX 1080p upscaling via HDMI. High-end 12bit 216MHz video DACs promise big improvements in component, too. It's also one of the first DVD players around to use full 10-bit video processing.
The 2930 also promises a big jump in audio quality and especially
in stereo performance. Five matched Burr-Brown 24/192 DACS are on board to assure equal quality on all channels and for minimum interference, while there's pure stereo path and audiophile capacitors for the analogue power supply.
Out now, priced at £650.
