Although last week Sony finally released its first Blu-ray disc spinner in the shapely form of the PS3, it seems for the ultimate in next-gen movie experience your wallet should point towards the new BDP-S1E player.
Why? Firstly, the BDP-S1E supports 24p True Cinema meaning it'll play movies at the exact frame rate and pitch they were originally filmed in - so in theory your home cinema experience will be just that little bit better. Also unlike the PS3, the BDP-S1E has the facility to upscale your current DVDs to full 1080p.
Sound buffs will be gald to see support for up to eight channels of uncompressed linear PCM digital audio output via HDMI as well as Dolby Digital Plus. Those without an HDMI socket on their HDTVs can join in the fun too, with a component output for 1080i viewing fitted as standard.
And just to remind you that it's a Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1E comes with a bright blue front panel, which we reckon actually looks a bit iffy to be honest.
Sony has confirmed the BDP-S1E will hit the shelves by summer. It hasn't been as forthcoming with pricing, although rumour has it you'll need around £1,000 to take the BDP-S1E home. Ouch.
