Firmly ensconced in the HD-DVD camp, Toshiba is continuing to adapt and upgrade the content and thus chances of HD-DVD winning out in the format war over bitter rival Blu-ray.
The Japanese giant has announced that current owners of Tosh's HD-DVD player range can now access web-enabled network capabilities via a simple firmware update. Using the Ethernet port found on all players for just such an occasion, once hooked up users will be able to download and save extra bonus features direct from movie studio servers for later viewing.
Further interactivity looks set to follow with touts of HD-DVDs featuring pre-loaded locked content that can be accessed only from a downloaded key, again from studio servers. Crazy.
“With HD-DVD, studios have the ability to develop new and unique content for movie fans, enabling consumers to have an entirely new way to access entertainment and customize their home movie experience that is currently not available with any other format,” commented Tosh's VP of marketing, Jodi Sally, no doubt with a slightly smug and well-deserved grin on her face. Your move, Blu-ray.
