According to the Beeb, more channels, including some in HD, could launch on the Freeview platform under Ofcom proposals to increase the capacity of DTT (digital terrestrial television).
The proposed upgrade could see HDTV available on Freeview as early as 2009. But those wishing to watch HD would need an HDTV and new set-top box.
This announcement follows news that terrestrial broadcasters the Beeb, ITV, Channel 4 and Five have agreed to bring HD channels to Freeview.
In a joint statement the collaborators said they had signed a 'non-binding memorandum of understanding' pledging to launch HD services between 2009 and 2012.
The launch of HD on Freeview has been problematic because of the limited capacity currently available for DTT services.
Ofcom however believes that capacity 'could, in time, more than double' through a combination of new technology and efficiency improvements.
