Circulating the rumour mills of the interweb for months now, 'Project Kangaroo' has finally been officially announced.
In case you're sitting there with raised eyebrows and visions of Skippy, allow us to enlighten you.
Project Kangaroo is a collaboration between the major terrestrial TV broadcasters (Five notwithstanding) to launch the mother of all on-demand television services in 2008.
It will offer over 10,000 hours of what those involved are promising to be the best of their current and archived programming.
Placing all this content under one umbrella website is a real boon for the consumer in terms of ease of use and compatibility (let's just hope lessons were learned from the iPlayer launch), with programmes available to stream and download and further options to watch, rent or buy.
The plans are still subject to formal approval from the BBC Trust and each company's official board. And as for that name; it's only temporary we're afraid, with an official title, branding and the like to be confirmed nearer the time.
