Having spent a good while waxing lyrical about a swathe of new - and free - software upgrades for the iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs moved onto the iPod Touch and confirmed a series of similar upgrades for the phone-free music player.
Five new applications are to be added - mail, stocks and notes; weather reports; maps with Wi-Fi location; web clips and the ability to customise home screens, all accessible using the Touch's Wi-Fi capabilities.
Although the software upgrades were well received, the news that it would cost Touch owners $20 to upgrade was not quite so welcome, especially when the same features are free for iPhone users.
Instead of the whoops and cheers Jobs' announcements are usually greeted with, an undercurrent of groans and murmurs rippled through the associated world press. Even the usually ebullient American press couldn't keep a lid on it - and to be honest, who can blame them?
The software upgrade is available from today for anyone willing to shell out the extra.
