Macworld 2008: iPod Touch

Having spent a good while waxing lyrical about a swathe of new - and free - software upgrades for the iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs moved onto the iPod Touch and confirmed a series of similar upgrades for the phone-free music player.

Five new applications are to be added - mail, stocks and notes; weather reports; maps with Wi-Fi location; web clips and the ability to customise home screens, all accessible using the Touch's Wi-Fi capabilities.

Although the software upgrades were well received, the news that it would cost Touch owners $20 to upgrade was not quite so welcome, especially when the same features are free for iPhone users.

Instead of the whoops and cheers Jobs' announcements are usually greeted with, an undercurrent of groans and murmurs rippled through the associated world press. Even the usually ebullient American press couldn't keep a lid on it - and to be honest, who can blame them?

The software upgrade is available from today for anyone willing to shell out the extra.

Who cares that a slew of loyal Apple consumers paid $400 for the Touch a a week ago, Steve can't miss a chance to nickel and dime them into coughing up more money for the same applications he gives away to iPhone owners and people who bought the IDENTICAL iPod Touch this morning.

This is just a preview of what is to come when the SDK is released next month. Look forward to Apple not missing the chance to make you pay for programs other developers and companies worked on for free just because he will want them to go through iTunes to distribute them.
With one single move Apple just drove a large percentage of their customers to learn how to Jailbreak their iPods.
