Pioneer LX01 Home Cinema system

In keeping with its sexy and glossy KURO image, Pioneer has launched a complementary (and by that we sadly don't mean free - that would be complimentary) home cinema system in the angular shape of the LX01.

This thing really means business too. On top of its 1080p upscaling, DVD recording home cinema claims, it also carries a 250GB hard drive and Freeview tuner.

There's a SHOWVIEW electronic programme guide for recording to the hard drive or DVD from the Freeview tuner alongside the now de rigueur pause, rewind, fast-forward features.

It plays nearly every DVD and CD format available as well as most compressed media formats, with a music library feature for storing tracks all automatically identified via the Gracenote database and recorded in lossless quality.

Full 5.1-channel audio is delivered by an almighty dual-drive subwoofer and four omni-directional satellites - two rears and two fronts sporting a proprietary technology that effectively recreates the centre channel.

The main unit is a solid unbesmirched glossy black block with a drop down panel hiding controls, connections and disc drive and is allied to a second smaller unit that shows disc status, channel controls etc.

The remote is a mixture of traditional and touchscreen controls and continues the glossy high-end aesthetic.

Further hook-up options include PC, iPod, USB keyboard and, thanks to the HDMI switching, a Blu-ray DVD player which means 1080p/24 video but all next-gen audio formats too including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

All of which goes some way towards explaining the wallet-melting £1,800 price tag.
