National Geographic has announced that it will be dropping HD DVD in favour of Blu-ray for its next gen releases from now on.
Forming part of the Warner family alongside the likes of New Line Home Ent, HBO Home Video and BBC Home Video, National Geographic is a relative newbie to the next-gen arena with only one HD release so far, Relentless Enemies, available on both formats.
According to Amazon's Movies and TV rank, the Blu-ray version is currently at 2,411 in the charts while the HD DVD release is a slightly less popular 25,756th.
The group's next release, Sharkwater, will launch on Blu-ray only in April, though the company intends to make no specific announcement concerning the abandonment on HD DVD.
This means that BBC Home Video is the only member still catering to both formats, and though it shows no direct sign of pulling out of the HD DVD camp, it will apparently continue to appraise the market before committing.
It is worth noting that this Blu-ray-only move covers films solely released under the 'National Geographic Presents' shingle and does not affect films co-produced by National Geographic but distributed under different companies.
