Panasonic VIERA PZ85, PZ80 and PX80 Plasma Display

By Duncan Madden

Panasonic VIERA PX80

The TV boffins at Panasonic have unveiled a raft of new VIERA plasma display models at the manufacturer's annual product demonstration in Valencia.

Consisting of three model ranges with the PZ85, PZ80 and PX80 series, Panny has also launched its first 46in model in the PZ85 range.

Speaking of which, the PZ85 Full HD Series arrives this March in two models - the TH-46PZ85B and TH-42PZ85B. Behind the flashy chassis there's plenty of tech to get the pulse racing, with the new 'Intelligent Frame Creation' feature powered by the company's proprietary V-Real Pro 3 processor that inserts additional frames between source frames to create a more natural frame-to-frame transition and thus a smoother image, especially in scenes of high action. Elsewhere there's 24p Real Cinema, VIERA Link and native contrast ratio of 30,000:1.

Next in line is the PZ80 Full HD Series arriving in April, May and June in the shape of the TH-50PZ80B, TH-46PZ80B and TH-42PZ80B. Also sporting the V-Real Pro 3 processor, these models serve up 100Hz Double Scan, x.v.Color, VIERA Link, the same contrast ratio as the PZ80 series and a trio of HDMI ports.

Last (and realistically least) is the PX80 HD Ready Series arriving in March with the TH-42PX80B and TH-37PX80B. Not prepped as Full HD models, the PX80 series still sports V-Real 3 technology and 100Hz Double Scan alongside three HDMI ports, PC input and SD memory card slot.

All the new Panny sets do their best to tick the eco box thanks to lead-free production and an 'Eco' mode that apparently lowers power consumption. All three also feature the new 'Tough Panel' finish, designed to prevent overzealous Nintendo Wii players and the like from smashing the screens on their shiny new sets.

Prices are yet to be confirmed on any models.
