Onkyo has unveiled a shiny new amplifier in the TX-SA606X that eliminates the compatibility issues of HDMI-CEC control.
When connected via HDMI, many modern AV components from the same manufacturer can be controlled by a single unit remote - so your Panasonic TV, amp and Blu-ray player all carry the VIERA Link brand and are thus compatible.
Trouble is when you start to mix and match your components. So say you have a Tosh TV and Panny Blu-ray player and despite both brands offering HDMI-CEC control - because they aren't the same manufacturer, they're not compatible.
Onkyo's latest amp arrives in silver or a particularly bling gold is compatible with Sharp, Panasonic and Toshiba's systems, thus allowing multi-brand integration.
Features-wise it boasts HDMI v1.3 connectors supporting Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA decoders, a 7x185-watts internal amplifier, optical and coaxial audio inputs the usual spattering of familiar video connectors.
Onkyo's latest lands in Japan April 29 for an unsurprisingly pricey ¥84,000 (around £420), with no word on a UK release date as yet.
