We've just come from a demonstration at the Grand Designs exhibition of the latest addition to the home entertainment canon - the D-Box chair.
Using the very latest technology, the D-Box puts the viewer right in the thick of the action by adding the sense of movement to make you feel as well as see and hear the film you're watching. Using a series of actuators linked in to the soundtrack of the film you are watching, the chair pitches, rolls, shudders, vibrates and heaves you right into the thick of it.
We had a demo with forthcoming Disney title National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets (due on DVD and Blu-ray 2 June), and experienced the visceral realism of a movie car chase first-hand as we got thrown around like a passenger in the beaten-up Mercedes. Excellent.
Compatible with specially coded Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, there are currently around 750 films to choose from with plenty of big titles like Pirates of the Caribbean and Die Hard 4 to choose from, though we'd recommend you stick to the action, as watching a romcom may not have quite the same impact.
The technology can apparently deliver up to 120 independent movements per frame to make things as realistic as possible and bring a whole new level of intensity to proceedings.
The system is also available in the Motion Platform Series, which can be retrofitted to an existing seat or sofa set up with exactly the same effect.
Available in the UK extremely soon, no price points were given so you'll need to contact the exclusive UK dealer to get a quote.
