Humax FOXSAT-HD

With the launch of Freesat, Humax has unveiled the FOXSAT-HD digital set top box - one of a group of new boxes designed for the new, free collaborative service between the Beeb and ITV.

Freesat currently offers up to 80 channels of viewing in both standard and High-Definition, and the FOXSAT takes full advantage of that with HDMI connector and cable in the box, and for those without the delights of an HDTV, a SCART connector.

A set-up wizard promises to have the uninitiated up and watching in four easy steps, and there's a seven-day EPG to plan your viewing agenda. Viewers can search for shows by genre, set up reminders and create favourite channels much like Sky et al.

The FOXSAT-HD also comes with an Ethernet port which is not currently enabled but is a safety feature to ensure owners can take advantage of future interactive services and upload additional content via IP.

Freesat is available without a monthly subscription; just a one-off payment covers the box, satellite dish and installation - organised by whichever shop you buy it from.

The FOXSAT-HD is on sale now for £150 from the major retailers you'd expect. Other boxes are available from Bush, Goodmans, Grundig and Panasonic with more, including hard-disk recorder versions, planned for later in the year.

Well the "Early Adoptors" are realy taking a hammering on the HD sat boxes!

I  know of no reason why they should cost so much more than a standard box, a few extra chips and an HDMI socket can't justify more that a hundred pounds more than an SD box - at this price I'd have expected a 40gb disk!
