ITV has announced that it is to launch its first ever High-Definition service this weekend on Freesat to coincide with the start of Euro 2008.
ITV's first foray into HD kicks off at 7.45pm with the Portugal versus Turkey game. And on top of the Euro 2008 Hi-Def coverage, ITV HD is promising a range of 'top movies' for the summer, along with the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and the England internationals
Not to be outdone, the BBC already has an established HD channel and it too will be showing games live on Freesat, beating ITV to the punch with the tournament-opening 5pm Switzerland versus Czech Republic game. Its HD content for the summer also includes Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Freesat is the new subscription-free digital satellite service collaboration from the BBC and ITV. Launched only a couple of months ago, it currently offers around 80 digital channels, though that figure is promised to jump to around the 200 mark by the end of the year. No monthly charge is made - you simply buy the box, install it, sit back and get watching.
