First information and (albeit shoddy) images have appeared of Sony's latest effort to massage the eco-conscience of the TV watching masses with the launch of the KDL-32JE1 energy saving LCD TV.
Announced with the claim that it is a truly 'green' option, it promises to save energy consumption without compromising on image quality. A press demo in Japan showed the 32incher to be consuming around 82W energy in comparison to a 'regular' model that used around 125W on the same HD image.
This is possible says Sony by developing a brighter backlight and better filtering that delivers the light more efficiently, with an energy saving over an old school CRT set of around 70 per cent annually.
The KDL-32JE1 goes on sale in Japan in July for 150,000 yen, or just over £700 UK money, and is promised to roll out to other global markets, though when that will be we don't know.
'We think ecology is going to become an important standard that consumers use in choosing products,' said Sony Japan's Emi Nagahara.
