Pioneer has developed the world's first 16-layer optical disc, roomy enough to store a gargantuan 400GB of data, with a 'per-layer' capacity of 25GB, the same as a Blu-ray disc.
The announcement also notes that the technology will be applicable to multi-layer recordable discs too, encouraging the feasibility of large-capacity optical discs expected to be necessary in the not too distant future.
The tech is all pretty in-depth, but essentially Pioneer has utilised the optical disc production technology it developed for DVD, using a new disc structure that reduces 'crosstalk' in adjacent layers meaning high-quality signals are produced from each.
The new 16-layer disc is capable of storing 'much more data than the conventional discs [and] will greatly reduce the number of discs used and therefore contribute to the conservation of resources'.
Everyone's a winner then.
