Never one to be deterred by a failed technology, Toshiba has put the ghost of HD DVD behind it and come out fighting with its latest upscaling disc spinner, the XD-E500, which it promises will improve the pics of your standard def DVD collection beyond anything else currently available.
Employing the new XDE (eXtended Detail Enhancement) technology, this does more than merely upconvert images claims Tosh.
The new player upscales content to 1080p standard and arrives with the usual HDMI connector and bounty of format support including DivX, MP3 and JPEG.
Tosh claims the launch is not a simple knee-jerk reaction to the failure of HD DVD but that it has in fact been working on the XDE technology for over two years with the intention of using it in devices besides DVD players.
'Consumers have embraced the DVD format like no other technology and invested in large libraries of their favorite movies. As the market moves towards High-Definition, XDE lets them experience their existing DVD library and the tens of thousands of DVD titles in a whole new way', said Louis Masses, director of Product Planning.
The XD-E500 goes on sale this month across the pond retailing at a wallet-friendly $150. And though there is no word on a UK release date as yet.
