Dutch giant Philips has taken the opportunity at IFA to jump on the 'thin is in' bandwagon with the launch of its Essence LCD TV.
The 42in model looks gorgeous, as is the norm for Philips, at only 38mm thick, surrounded by a lovely 17mm bezel in polished black aluminium. Hubba.
The screen will serve up the same performance as Philips' existing 9000 Series of TVs, but critically will work using a separate media box containing all the techwizardry. Unfortunately, Philips hasn't been able to match some of its wireless competitors and connects box to screen with a single 4m cable.
The media box sports a trio of HDMI connectors and offers singular remote control by RF so it can be stored out of sight.
The Essence's screen will sport a separate soundbar speaker pumping out dual 15W stereo sound, while images will be catered to by Philips' proven Perfect Pixel HD ending, complemented with 100Hz ClearLCD to optimise motion smoothness.
DLNA certified with an Ethernet connector, owners will also be able to stream media from a UPnP source.
Wall mountable, we particularly like the ability to level the display by hand rather than reaching around the back armed with a hex key - it's all about user friendliness apparently.
Available very soon, the Essence will retail around the €2,500 mark.
