Sony BRAVIA World First Range

By Mike Lowe

Sony BRAVIA new models

Sony now has on sale four new television models in the European market including the Z4500, the first Motionflow 200Hz BRAVIA, the BRAVIA ZX1, the world's thinnest production LCD TV, the BRAVIA EX1, the first LCD Picture Frame TV with Hi-Def wireless connectivity and the much anticipated appearance of Sony's first OLED TV, the XEL-1.

First up then is the Z4500. This model offers 'best ever Full HD motion clarity' thanks to its Motionflow 200Hz BRAVIA tech, which uses sophisticated algorithms to create three extra frames for every original frame, bumping the rate from 50 to 200 per second. Sony claims the result is the smoothest and clearest motion on an LCD TV.

Another image enhancement tech called IB Reduction (that's Image Blur by the way) boosts sharpness by improving the original image before it's processed by the Motionflow.

Next up is the world's thinnest production LCD TV, the ZX1. Sitting at 9.9mm thin, this Full HD display is as skinny as a CD case and a 'must for the design conscious consumer'.

The slimline dimensions are achievable using side-mounted LEDs to illuminate the screen instead of the usual backlight array.

The first HD TV to feature wireless connectivity is the BRAVIA EX1. Created specifically for the European market, the EX1 is part of Sony's Picture Frame range and is available in 40in, 46in and 52in screen sizes, all of which are intended to be wall mounted to maximise the Picture Frame design appeal using the 20mm deep mounting bracket. Last in the line-up is the XEL-1 OLED TV, which we have seen so much of at trade shows around the world.

The first OLED TV to go on sale in the Euro market, the 11in XEL-1 uses the organic light emitting diode technology to create its own light source, meaning no need for bulky back or side lighting systems, meaning it is super skinny while also delivering 'superlative image quality'.

OLED also brings with it a purity of black that plasma and LCD cannot achieve, meaning a contrast ratio of well over 1,000,000:1 and almost perfect fidelity and colour reproduction.

All four models are now available in the UK. The Z4500 starts at £1,850, the EX1 at £2,290, the ZX1 at £2,930 and the XEL-1 at £3,500.
