Sony NW-HD5 Network Walkman

Sony has again raised the bar in its battle against the iPod with the announcement of the NW-HD5, the latest addition to its Network Walkman series. Sony claims that it's the world's smallest 20Gb player, and with a weight of just 125g and measuring 5.6cm by 8.9cm, they might just be right.

Probably the most notable improvement over its predecessor the NW-HD3, is the removable battery which is now said to last for an incredible 40 hours provided you're listening to music in Sony's proprietary ATRAC format (with MP3 playback it's 30 hours).

Another addition is its 'follow turn' feature, meaning the display is synchronised to your hand movements, flipping from horizontal to vertical depending on your every move. As with its previous incarnations, the player will come with SonicStage music management software (now version 3.1), which will allow access to download tracks from the Sony Connect online store.

The HD5 comes in a choice of red, black or silver and will retail at £199 on its release in May. Sony has also said there will be a limited edition 30Gb version available in silver with black buttons, but a UK release date has yet to be confirmed for this model.

These look very nice indeed. I've also been reading that they now allow playback of MP3's directly (rather than converting them into the ATRAC format) which was probably the main turn-off for me.

Sony's new walkman range
Blimey, Sony appears to be tripping over itself to release new MP3 players at the moment. Only a couple of weeks back we got news of the Walkman Bean range of flash-based players, and now its hard disk line-up is getting a make-over...
