A mini HDMI connector designed to deliver the same HD performance as the more traditional HDMI cable is apparently being developed in order to output Hi-Def pics and sonics for portable media players of every kind, from phones to MP3 players.
Under the current standard the HDMI ports essential for that HD goodness are simply too big to fit onto the diminutive portable gadgets, but the mini HDMI could change all of that.
Still sporting the 19-pin connector and capable of delivering the 10.2Gb per second bandwidth, the mini HDMI measures 6.4x2.8mm - easily small enough to keep in trim with everything from satnav system to iPod.
The fairly titchy type C HDMI is already available, but this type D connector as the prototype is about half the size of it - around the same as a micro USB slot.
It's still in the prototype stage however, but as long as HD is here to stay expect to see it creeping onto portable devices in the not too distant future.
