Is this the beginning of the end for the mighty compact disc? If top-end Brit manufacturer Linn is to be believed, that's a definite yes, as the company has become the first to take the 'dramatic decision' to stop making CD players.
The company has announced it is to turn its focus onto digital steaming equipment from the beginning of 2010, noting that 'discerning customers recognised the superior quality of digital streaming' and thus sales of such kit outstripped those of the humble CD player for the first time in 2009.
Wonderfully monikered Linn product manager Gilad Tiefenbrun noted, 'Our customers have fast recognised the limitations of CD players and in the age of home networking, people now want better control of their music and the ability to enjoy it in any room of their home… CD players no longer belong in the specialist domain'.
Linn will however continue to manufacture turntables for vinyl, as it says there remains a demand for the tone and quality offered by the older technology.
What do you think? Is the CD doomed for the great bargain bin in the sky or has Linn jumped the shark? Have your say below.
