JVC TH-R1 and TH-R3 DVD systems

TH-R3

DVD systems are quickly emerging as an easy, cost effective way of getting a home cinema setup. Although the usual package comprises a DVD player and 5.1 channel speakers, more recently manufacturers have began to bundle in a DVD recorder instead. This is the route JVC has taken with the announcement of the TH-R1 and TH-R3, both comprising a multi-format DVD recorder, a speaker system, and a powered subwoofer.

Both 5.1-channel systems deliver PAL-progressive pictures and feature an interesting 'hand-clap' surround sound set-up whereby the levels and delay times of the individual speakers are automatically optimised for your listening position. They allow recording and playback of DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R (video format), plus playback of DVD-Video, MP3, and JPEG digital stills (CD-R/RW).

Both boast high 810 watts of power, and compatible surround formats include Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS 96/24, and Dolby Pro Logic II. Plus, they also come with Virtual Surround Back, which delivers the excitement of 6.1-channel sound without having to add a surround back speaker.
TH-R1

The TH-R1 comes with the JVC-trademarked Omni-Directional Surround Speaker Version 2.0 that features an upward-facing speaker with a diffuser of matching size, which directs sound not only forward, but also up and in all horizontal directions. The TH-R3 comes with sleek floorstanding front/surround speakers that can be detached from the stand to be mounted on a wall.

Prices for the systems have yet to be confirmed but there's more information at www.jvc.co.uk.
