Audica audio system

A plethora of MP3 player accessories have passed our gadget-hungry gaze in recent months, and here's another to come into view. Audica's MPS1 is designed for use with a personal music player whether it may be portable CD, MiniDisc player, iPod, MP3 player or computer (PC or Mac).

For your money you get a combination of two polished extruded aluminium loudspeakers utilising 50mm drive units and an aluminium encased amplifier and control unit. There's also a sleek matching remote control made out of yes, you guessed it, aluminium.

The system has three inputs selectable on the amplifier module or by remote control and USB and FireWire connectors on the rear panel to allow your portable music player to be charged. A handy feature is that one of these inputs is extra sensitive to allow for low-level outputs such as PC systems so that sound level differences when changing inputs are minimised.

While undoubtedly good looking, we wonder whether the £250 asking price is a little steep for what is essentially a pair of modestly sized speakers and smallish amp. You'll be able to judge for yourself in late November when the MPS1 hits the shelves.
