Now, we weren't overly impressed by Monitor Audio's last subwoofer, the Radius 360. We felt it was a tad lightweight and lacked that oh so vital punchiness required from a living room sub. However, the new Radius 720 Supersub is an evolution from the R360 and hopes to correct these shortcomings.
The R720's main features include twin downward-firing 8in paper cone drivers that are mounted within a ported enclosure and controlled by a built-in 250-watt amplifier. RCA stereo inputs and an LFE input are provided for connection to a two-channel amplifier or multi-channel home cinema receiver. Also, there's a useful auto function that switches the R720 on when an input signal is detected and switches it off after approximately 15 minutes if there's no signal.
Although the cabinet is constructed from heavy duty MDF, a choice of real wood veneer, satin and lacquer finishes should help ensure the R720 looks the part. It's available now for £500, which is £150 more than the R360, so we're hoping the improvements will warrant the price hike.
