Samsung YP-T8 media player

We've been waiting a while for Samsung to announce a release date for the YP-T8, the latest addition to its flash-based MP3 product line, so we're glad to report that the wait is over.

Why should you be interested in the YP-T8? Well, the previous model, the YP-T7 only supported audio and photo playback, whereas on the new one you can watch MPEG4 videos too which is pretty impressive considering its shorter in size than the iPod Shuffle. Even though it's so tiny it manages to cram in a 1.8 inch colour TFT LCD screen, whilst offering 20 hours battery life and weighing a mere 55 grams.

If watching videos on a screen of that size doesn't appeal, then there's always music playback for which there is support for MP3, WMA, WMA DRM, WAV, OGG and ASF music formats (with only AAC conspicuous by its absence). And in what's becoming commonplace these days, the player will let you encode MP3s via the line-in socket for the transferring music from a CD player, hi-fi system or MP3 device without the need for a computer. There's an FM radio thrown in for good measure too.

The USB Host feature is another cool feature allowing access to compatible USB devices to move or copy files directly to the memory of the YP-T8 such as an MP3 player to move music or camera to move across photos. Now, all that should be enough to satisfy most gadget needs, but just in case you want more Samsung has incorporated five built-in full colour video games featuring Samsung's G-Sensor technology, whereby some games are controlled by moving the device itself.

The YP-T8X (512Mb) and YP-T8Z (1Gb) are available now with a guide price £150 and £180 respectively. That's a lot to pay for a flash player with modest storage, but no doubt Samsung will be hoping all those features will make it money well spent. And of course, it does look a bit like a mobile phone, which is no bad thing.
