New iPod next week?

Could the iPod Video be just around the corner? If it is lets hope it looks better than this...

Apple has rounded up the usual industry, trade and journalist types to invite them to an event on October 12th entitled 'One More Thing'. The 'One More Thing' event title is an entirely self-referential marketing technique designed to build anticipation, the title coming from the infamous words that Steve Jobs speaks before dropping a bombshell at the end of his keynote speeches. Geeks and Apple fanboys everywhere are breaking into sweats and bursting blood vessels trying to guess what the announcement will be.

This is causing considerable rumblings in the rumour departments across the web spurred in by the fact that it was this time last year, at the same venue, that the U2 iPod and the iPod Photo were first announced. There seem to be two main schools of thought for what will be announced the first claiming it will be the much heralded video capable iPod an the second proclaiming merely an update in harddrive capacity (80gb) and the nano becoming available in a few more colours.

We don't like to speculate too much at the office but agree that a video capable iPod would be cool. What do you think the announcement will be? Ipod Video? New nano colours? Don't care either way?! Share all your views here.

I'd quite like the iPod video to be a reality but I think it's very unlikely. There is no structure in place for an itunes style video store so they'd probably not think it to be maxiumumly profitable at this stage.

That said if it was a reality the design I'd favour would keep the same size as the current ipod but move the clickwheel to the back, leaving the front for a full size widescreen. Anybody agree?
