IXOS has a new HDMI cable hitting the streets, the sexily titled XHT458. High definiton signals range from between 420i (interlaced) to 1080p (progressive) but not all HDMI cables are created equal and most can only handle 1080i, and that only to a distance of around four metres. These IXOS cables have no such problem and as such are to a degree future proof (until HD is superseded at least). To put it into real terms the cable can transmit 1080p, the highest resolution available, over a distance of 7.5 metres (25 feet) and the slightly lower signals of 720p and 1080i over 25 metres (around 80 feet). IXOS claims the cable will reap benefits on your display at any resolution, purporting to make colours richer, sharper and more vibrant.
A problem that occurs in some HDMI cables is FEXT (Far End Cross Talk), this is caused by the connectors' small size and exposed non-insulated contacts. This results in the impedance of the cables becoming altered at the contact point. In turn this can lead to cross talk between two or more wires of different impedances which detracts from the quality of the picture and sound. However, the IXOS has a unique four-layer PC board with solid cast metal plugs which is able to minimize the potential threat of FEXT.
The XHT458 HDMI cable is available now priced at £80 per metre.
