The BBC has announced that it intends to roll out HD trials in mid 2006. They plan to broadcast some peaktime shows on satellite and cable in limited technical trials. Having already recorded a lot of content in HD, all sporting events and lots of documentaries for the BBC international market, there is already a pre-existing catalogue of programming to show. Most high profile shows are already shot in HD and the corporation aims for all in house productions to be shot in HD by 2010.
The trail will last for twelve months and will be available across satellite, cable and terrestrial, but will be dependent on when the respective HD services launch. Interestingly the corporation is also applying to Ofcom for temporary use of an unused terrestrial frequency so as to trial HDTV via Freeview, though only in the London area. However, the capacity for HD to be broadcast over Freeview will be very limited until the analogue switch off.
We think that HD will be a success but will probably have more of a slow burning impact rather than an instantaneous paradigm shift. Let us know what you think by starting a discussion below.
