Jamo has unveiled a new breed of speaker, one that it claims is uncompromised by the constraints that a cabinet brings. Thinking, quite literally, outside of the box, the R 909 dispenses with the cabinet approach entirely and is essentially of an open backed design. The ramifications of this are latent; the sound should be allowed to flow more organically rather than be muffled by the cabinet.
The problem that would likely present itself is in the fact that cabinets also allow and provide a rich bass output. Obviously then there is a need to avoid cannibalising the bass sound in opening up the speaker so, with this in mind, Jamo has employed an open magnesium basket and paper cone setup, which promise to deliver deep and rewarding bass.
There is also a new mid range driver with neodymium magnet arrangement that can deliver output up to 9kHz without break-up. This in real terms should lead to excellent reproduction of vocals. The tweeter, or rather the Scanspeak tweeter, is also worthy of note. There is a double-damped chamber behind the magnet system which features an anti resonator plug to eliminate turbulence.
Jamo believes these speakers will change the way we enjoy music through eliminating coloration and reverberation. Big claims but ones that might just be right, we look forward to seeing these in action to see if Jamo can deliver on their promises.
Available early January these speakers will cost merely £7,500 a pair.
