There are already a couple of digital connection interfaces on the market - namely HDMI and DVI - but now add DisplayPort to that list.
According to the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), DisplayPort's creator, this new connection will look to directly compete with HDMI by not only offering backwards compatibility with DVI, but also offering greater bandwidth for HD video than either DVI or HDMI.
DisplayPort has recently received serious industry backing from the likes of Dell, HP and Lenovo who are all keen for a higher performance, low cost, digital interface standard to replace DVI, the current PC digital connection of choice. VESA also reckons the PC industry needs a ubiquitous digital interface with optional copy protection but at a low cost, something that it claims HDMI can't offer.
As for the wider implications of DisplayPort, VESA is hoping it'll be embraced not only by PC manufacturers, but by TV and projector companies as well. But with HDMI already successfully emerging in these areas, we'll just have to wait and see on that one.
What do you think to the emergence of DisplayPort? Will it spark a connection format war or are we looking at a false dawn? Have your say here.
