'LEAST WORST DVD RECORDER AVAILABLE'
Strengths:
Good quality DVD burns, with better disc compatibility than most.

It's a PVR. Sort of.
Weaknesses:
Maddening lack of usability for anyone used to fab PVRs like Humax & Sky+. eg Most functions unavailable during a recording, except playback. Bewildering menu and function sequence for non-anoraks.

Single tuner so restrictive (when progs overlap or even adjoin), worth waiting for a twin tuner model.

REALLY dull sound on HDD recordings. Direct comparison during recording (with the live output from the decent Freeview tuner) shows it destroys the presence, higher EQ and punch from the source audio. This is sad, since PVRs are the greatest thing for radio since stereo. You can timeshift whole series and archive the best bits or songs. (Anyone wanna buy some timeswitches, tuners and cassette decks?)

Picture unimpressive. Record from external box if it's anything we want to archive with decent picture quality!

Lousy remote: slow, misses commands, layout insane, easy to key wrong.

Useless in non-Freeview areas until switchover (no analogue tuner).
Overall:
If you have to buy a DVD recorder (that isn't a VCR combo) now, this is the one.

'SOME ASPECTS OVERLY COMPLICATED BUT HIGH QUALITY MACHINE'
Strengths:
The picture quality is great from sp upwards and the unit is very reliable
Weaknesses:
Some of the functions are overly complicated and the handset is not intuitively laid out. However if you only want to record and play back then this one is great.
Overall:
I am an Apple Mac user and this machine to me is a bit like going on a PC. Nothing seems to be quite where you might expect it on the handset or in the menu but having gone through everything a few times now and understanding it's slightly slewed logic I can operate it with easily. The Sonys I had first was laid out in a much more logical way (which may just be subjective anyway) but sadly they didn't work!
