'UNRELIABLE AND FAULTY'
Strengths:
Looked great with an wonderful handset and instruction booklet. All very clearly laid out and easy to use
Weaknesses:
The 8 day guide looked good but was awful to operate because the screen lagged behind the commands from the hand set, which meant it was possible to fly past the timeframe you were aiming for.
Overall:
I have now had two of these machines both of which had the same fault;both "forgot" programmes that I had selected to record. Having made say four selections for the week it would gradually lose them over a few days. Trying to convince the independent repair Dept. of the Co-op I bought it from of the precise problem was a bit of a nightmare as they assumed that anyone over 50 was a complete idiot and unable operate anything more complicated than a kettle. It was made worse by the second Sony having the same fault as the first. I eventually had the second machine replaced with an equivalent Panasonic. This was much more complicated than the Sony but did work!

'LOVELY MACHINE WITH BUNDLES OF FEATURES.'
Strengths:
Great sound and picture quality. the upscaling works very well. The ability to record to HDD and then copy to DVD is a feature i couldn't be without. films without adverts etc.
Weaknesses:
None to speak of. Some say the menu structure is complex... can't say i found it so. it's straightforward and obvious. in a typical sony fashion there are many many options from which to choose, so perhaps thats the confusion.
Overall:
buildt quality is sound, price point is good. picture and sound are crisp, clear, bright and open. couple with a decent HDMI cable the upscaled picture is first class. programme guide is smart and clear quick to load and easy to link series for recording etc.

'WORTH EVERY PENNY. HOW DID I MANAGE WITHOUT IT?'
Strengths:
Series recording
Storage space
Editing
Review thumbnails
EPG
Weaknesses:
Would be handy if the remote was back lit.
No timer to say how long it will take to dubb from HD to DVD.
Can't watch one programme whilst recording another.
Some of the setup menus I havent a clue what they mean
Overall:
I was thinking of buying the 970 for it's 250 Gig hardrive (until Amazon put it up) but 160 gig is more than enough space and I still have the option to copy to DVD if I ever run out of storage.
Not tried out all the features yet but so far this is a truly well worth buy.

'GREAT MACHINE, FIENDISHLY COMPLICATED TO OPERATE!'
Strengths:
looks great, great picture, makes good dvd's
Weaknesses:
too many variables, poor instruction manual, onscreen instructions often don't agree with manual, onscreen tv guide cuts off sound and picture-
Overall:
basically a sound piece of technology, but man oh man, NOT user friendly! For someone who has no technical savvy, this would be a nightmare. Please someone tell me where I can find an idiot's guide online!!
