'JAW-DROPPING PICTURE QUALITY; IT'S LIKE BUYING 2 NEW EYES.'
Strengths:
Easy to set up
Stylish
Outstanding picture quality
Great sound
Ambilight function
Weaknesses:
None that I've found.
Overall:
I'm not easily impressed by gadgets, but this is different. Heck, I even thought the box was a brilliant design (no trip to the chiropractor necessary).
The Quick Start guide was (wait for it) actually true to its word; a technological idiot could (and did) follow it. The remote control is simple to use, and stylish to boot. To set up, choose your language, select start and, well, that's it. The TV is quicker and easier to set up than a PURE DAB digital radio.
Around the back (not a place I usually loiter), connecting the video (yes, I still have one on those) was as easy as putting a scart cable in a slot marked "EXT1".
This is all very good news for the likes of me. Start watching the TV and the quality and clarity of the picture will leave your jaw agap. My 10-year old Sony Trinitron delivered a good picture, but the Philips is like the first day I wore glasses after years of piecemeal eye deterioration: a world new world of colour and clarity opens up.
The "Ambilight" function (a button on the remote says "Ambilight"; you push it) is simple and astonishing, especially for watching films.
A thin speaker around the screen delivers CD-quality sound with both clarity and richness.
The TV probably has a million-and-one other functions I'll never need and use ("future-proofing" I believe it's called). No matter, as what's important to me - the picture quality and sound - are just about perfect. I'm seeing a whole new world, and I love it. Who said you shouldn't judge a TV by its box?
